Well gas in Florida is reaching 2.70/gal. for low octane. What I hear it will be at the 3.00 gallon level by Summer. How will the gas prices effect everyones tournament fishing this year?
I for one will be fishing mostly from my smaller rig which I can pull with my V6 Ford. My Tahoe pulling my 20' boat will bankrupt me this year...not to mention the gas(high octane) my older 225 hp sucks.

I think I will use the electric more, and fish a lot closer to the launch pad.

Gas is high, but it's all relative. How much is a bottle of water? $1.29 to $1.49. You pay that for 20 oz. no problem or at least most do. What would a gallon of bottled water cost you?
I have seen guys put 87 octane in their boats, don't go on the cheap and do that. You'll pay in the long run.

Don't forget each gallon of gas you buy car or boat has 38.4 cents per gallon added on to what you pay. This is based on the following web site. www.gaspricewatch.com/usgastaxes.aspAnd if you think all of that money goes to the roads, think again. It goes to the general fund and then the money gets disbursed on how the government best sees fit.

In St. Paul they are moving quickly and strongly on a gas tax increase. The proposed increase is 10 cents per gallon. 5 cents the first year and another 5 cents the following year.
Instead of paying 38.4 cents per gallon, it two years we will be paying 48.4 cents per gallon just for the tax. If gas is $2.00 per gallon, what we would have to pay is $2.48 per gallon. That's a 24% tax.
Pawlenty is planning on vetoing this bill and the house and senate are already working on getting enough votes to over ride the veto.

If I was concerned about gas, I would drive with efficiency in mind...
How many will drive at 4000 RPM's to their starting spot. Also, the selling point of the new marine engines is they no longer need premium...however, you will never see 87 in my boat.
Isn't this weather great!

Hey Guys , Bob , Good Point on the 87 octane gas . Did not know you could put 92 octane in HPDI Motors . This year I will Be Running the good stuff also. Had problems last year . Yamaha said bad gas took out both my fuel pumps . They did warranty the fuel pumps and labor because I've got a good relationship with the dealer . They told me that just about every motor company out there will not warranty motors or parts if they can trace it back to bad gas . Have you had better luck with one Gasoline than another ? As far as the Gas price goes when in the last 2 summers hasn't it been $3 a gallon . Everyone gets used to it now . Nobody stays home . Conserve when pre fishing . Go balls out tournament day , Unless you want me to beat you to to your spot !!! Ha , Ha .

I am very selective on gas, I would much prefer a very busy station, one that gets tankers weekly and tests for moisture. So far, knock on wood, I have not experienced any bad gas. (in my boat) I also use ring free as it will help and is highly recommended. Another thing I do is switch tanks and run them to near empty, then fill them up completely. The reason is small amounts can actually cause condensation, say throwing in $10.00 at a time. Funny $10.00 bucks used to be enough to fill a 6 gallon tank, now 75.00 is not enough to fill up anymore.
Also, back when I went to Mercury school, you should never (never) switch oils. They are gettingmuch better, but it is not a good idea to switch from brand to brand due to the chemical composition and possible reaction in the cylinders.
It is always good to maintain a good relationship with a dealer, glad they were able to fix you up.

well I plan to fish about the same as last year, but I hope to get 3 times the gas mileage with my new opti. if anything at least twice. I also try not to listen to roomers.

As I've recently learned, gas can make a huge difference. Your normal Holiday's, SA's and Independant stations basically bid on the lowest cost, lowest grade fuels. High turnover at these stations will not improve the quality of those fuels and there is actually little to no condensation in the tanks producing water. That is usually leaked in by an open cover, etc.
Branded gas IS actually different. Though all originate in the same pipes at the same refinery, the branded fuels generally are diverted to separate tanks where additives are put into the fuel which increase the fuel stability and clean engine parts, rather than gunk them up. Stay away from indepenants when filling your high performance boat engines, or you'll be asking for problems. Octane alone is not the key, but is also important. Clean burning, high octane fuel is how you'll get the longevity and performance from your engines.
And when you're in the Chisago/Lindstrom area, I suggest the Shell station just East of the DQ in Lindstrom. They have bait, tackle, goodies, and the best gas in town. ;D

Hey Guys, Kind of fun looking back on these posts . Last spring we were worried about $3.00 gallon gas . 2 days ago I heard on A B C news that $4.00 a gallon gas by Memorial Weekend is not out of the question. All you can say about that is i wish i had stock in Exxon Mobile!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its fun to talk about how many circuts a guy is going to fish right now , but when it comes time to lay the money down how many really will fish everything . I know my gas bill was huge for last year i can't imagine what its going to be this year .

I haven't heard that. Minnesota Democrats in the house are pushing a gas tax. It will immediately bump the gas up 2 cents per gallon with another 3 cents added by fall. Another 2.5 cents would be added in 2010.
As of today according to gaspricewatch.com, we pay 20 cents per gallon state tax and 18.4 cents per gallon federal tax. 38.4 cents per gallon is the tax. It does not fluctuate whether the price is $3.00/gallon or $4.00/gallon. At $3.00/gallon, the tax rate is 12.8%.
Sales tax rate is 6.5%.
When we were paying $2.50/gallon, the tax rate on gas was 15.36%.
I have to wonder how the tax rate is so high on gas, but everything else except for essentials clothing and food are taxed at 6.5%. Isn't gas essential? I guess that's debatable.
People would pay attention to this much more if gas stations put the price up what the gas actually cost, just like a bottle of soda, the price is $1.49 and then you get the counter and the tax is added and it's $1.59. You know you paid 10 cents in tax.
So back to my point, a gas station posts the price at $2.61. You put 20 gallons in and your gas cost is $52.20. You tell the cashier you had gas on pump 1 and she says the total is $59.88. People would notice it then.
People buy bottles of water at $1.29 all day long. That is 20 ounces. If you purchased one gallon of water in these bottles, the gallon cost is $8.26.
Gas is $2.89 for a gallon. Makes it seem like a good deal.
