Do you think the pin type floats that requires you to punch a hole is bad for the fish? Should they be banned in the rules?

Two things...
The xCull clips are terrible, I would recommend replacing them with metal clips.
If you run the metal clip through the first gill plate and mouth as recommended and not punch through there is no harm. Check out the life tags to see how they work. Only thing with life tags ($44.00) They are made by cullmrite. The xcull scale is not as accurate, so prepare to measure before culling.
I have culling clips (plastic) if you want some.
Someone made a good point about not picking them up by the clips. If you do punch through, use the bottom jaw, sharpen your metal clips, and DO NOT pick the fish up with them.
My two cents...by the way, I have never lost a fish in the live well yet.

Cul M Rite is the way to go. I used it last year for the first time and it was great. The X Cull system I have seen non-boaters use and they are reclipping fish all the time. Not as a result of them picking the fish up by the tag, but the clip comes off as they are swimming around in the livewell, especially when you open the livewell lid and they move and bang into the wall. To order go to: www.culmrite.com/Spendy, but I think once you use it a couple of times, you won't regret it.

I have the xcull. Used them once in a tournament, and now all they do is sit in storage on my boat. I'd get them out of there if I didn't hate looking at them so much. They were rotten; bet the clip didn't stay on the fish more than two minutes.
I haven't found the solve yet. I'll check out Cull M Rite though based on the recommendations here.

The XCull pins with there clips do suck. They are however very easy to replace with metal clips. You can purchase a very cheap old style chain stringer and take the metal clips from there and put on the XCull pins. XCull pins a very sturdy and you can pick all fish out of the well at one time if needed without worry of the floats pulling of, as has happened with other float systems. Tight Lines, B

Circle the wagons...pin type floats are used at every level, more important is how to use them...please do not ban them. Life tags are also good, they thread through the gill plate and are suppose to be more friendly. As with any product claim, they may be...
Take the time, sharpen your clips and use the lower jaw.

I would never ban them...I'd use them if I would ever catch my limit. However, that doesn't mean you'll not see it hidden in some DNR statute language that gets passed in the middle of the night.

I sold my life tags and went back to tried and true...metal (sharpened) clips.

I use the metal clips myself. Tried the plastic clips but they came off all the time. Then you have to catch the fish in the live well and re-tag them. Waste of time so I stick with what works. Arnie

I might start shoving all of my fish into a tube sock...each sock would have a different color stripe. The only harm to the fish is possible athlete's foot. And since fish don't have feet...well, seems to me the fish goes unharmed.
If that doesn't work, I was thinking about those little doggie life vests. With the strap on the back, the fish would be easy to pull out of a livewell. Of course, I don't know what the fish will think about floating on top of the water all day.

Well the good news is that 12" fish will have plenty of room...we are going to work on that this year.
