hey guys....last month I was winterizing my motors and when I drained the lower unit on one of my boats...nothing but water came out...ouch I must have blow-out my lower unit seal and lost my oil somewhere along the line...the boat wasn't used much this year so I don't really know when it happen. I replaced the oil and turned the prop...it isn't as smooth as my other props on my other boats...it feels like something got damaged inside. I did noticed my last time out on a couple of times it felt like I motor was missing..may have been the gears slipping and grinding metal on metal Is there an easy pressure test and low cost equipment one can test the seal? I'm sure I'm screwed.....can anyone guess how bad

Joel, Take it to Brainerd Sports and Marine, kitty corner from state hospital on hwy 18. They are honest and do only what you need done. Trust me, on the Tracker you sold me I have been there many times A buddy of mine had a similar thing happen, but he had some oil come out with the water. He thought he needed the lower unit redone, It turned out all his had (believe it or not) was a screw gasket go bad from using it over when he refilled it the time before. They could have taken him to the cleaners but instead he got a very modest bill, and 2 new screw gaskets instead. Just my two cents. Wish I lived in FL over the winter too! Take care, Ron

Joel,
I am going to assume you already pulled the prop to ensure no fish line was present. Typically this is not a big deal, if you do the repair your self, it is not expensive. A pressure check will give you a start...if you know there was line caught, replace the prop shaft seal. If you are not sure...any dealer that services your brand of motor. Good Luck, should be fine.

Yep...had some line in the prop...who knows when the seal went out...spent close to $500 to replace all seals and water pump.
POLL: How many check and or replace their lower unit oil during the season and how often??

Joel, I had the same problem on my first practice day of the Schara tourny, it cost me a complete lower unit. Took out carrier and all bushings and bearings, line on the prop shaft was the culprit. Every time I shut down it smelled like someone was tarring their road and my motor had a distinct howl to it. Most insurance co's will cover rebuilt lower units only. Repman
