Santa brought me a Lowerance with a built in GPS, I can finally get rid of my handheld.
I was just wondering whos map disk I should buy. I have seen a few different ones, but LakeMaster seems to have the best

The New Lakemaster has a ton more to offer. I have three different Navionics chips, they are fair...for MN, my choice would be Lakemaster. PS - I have a humminbird, therefore the Navionics.

:-/So do all of the GPS units accept Lakemaster media? I'm thinking of purchasing a unit this spring and would like help on finding what are the better units out there. I'm still not sure if I want a combo unit (depth finder / gps) or just a gps unit. Your thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

Check out www.lakemap.com for the units that can use this chips. Everyone has a preference in units, most of the electronics I had in the past were lowrance. They have a very good product with a wide variety in both price and quality. Go to your local sports shop, maybe more than one and collect preferences and understand why. The reason I say that, is to me a vexilar is an awesome walleye unit, okay for bass. The new 334ci has its problems with an internal antenna, the 332c is highly recommended... Since you have web access, look around in some forums like this and see what folks are talking about. Stay away from sponsor references, they are paid to promote. I have two humminbirds for sale, 2005 Matrix 97 and 87, both color and have Navionics maps. Lowrance has a new line up this year and I am going back to them. Bob

Thanks for the info. I checked out the website and I am impressed with the number of lakes that they cover in Minnesota. I'll probably stop at Cabelas and check out what they have and get the "snake oil" salesmen's pitches on the different units. Did Lowrance solve the internal attenna problem with their new line? Would be much nicer if the internal attenna worked.
Thanks again,
Jerry

From what I hear, stopped by Cabelas on Saturday and stopped by another sports shop, stay away from the internal antenna for now. I heard they were working on a good solution. A relative of mine has a Garmin with an internal and loves it, he also sells lowrance and told me to look at the 332 over the 334 (interenal) They have a new line up, you may want to check out the March show, it is a good time to buy. (only time to buy) If you go to www.lowrance.com they have simulator of any unit, download it and see how you like it. Good Luck

Lakemaster is pretty good - Reeds had them for about $49 at the sport show last year. I believe that they are brand specific as different mfg use different file formats.
